Lord’s Day 8: Three in One, One in Three: Q&A 24-25

Succinctly and clearly talking about our Triune God has been something scholars, pastors, and everyday Christians have been struggling with for a good couple thousand years. Just about every metaphor falls apart at some point, because as the classic song by Laura Story testifies, God is indescribable and uncontainable.

Lord’s Day 8 is a bit presuppositional as we start to look more seriously at the Apostles’ Creed. That is, the authors want to make sure we’re on the same page as to who God is before we start diving into doctrinal theology more deeply. God is three persons in one Godhead. Why? Because that’s how God has revealed himself to us. Thusly, the Creed is in three parts. Note: God does not have parts, God has persons. Cars have parts. (paraphrased from Dr. Yudha Thianto)

As we seek to bring ourselves and our communities into worship of this God whom we cannot properly and truly describe, let us be humble. May we not try to pretend like we know how to talk about God, but instead invite people into the mystery.

LORD’S DAY 8

Q&A 24-25

GOD’S GREETING

Brothers and Sisters, our God–The Father who created all things, the Son who delivers us from our fallen nature, and the Spirit who sanctifies us every day–Three persons in one God as revealed to us in the Scriptures–welcomes all of us into this time of worship together.

PRAYER OF ADORATION

God–Father, Son, and Spirit–we praise you today. Father, you have created everything that was, is, and ever will be. Jesus Christ, you are our Lord and deliverer. Your death and resurrection has granted us eternal life in you. Holy Spirit, you intercede for us when we do not know how to talk to you. You sanctify us and empower us. Triune God–Three in One–we cannot properly fathom the depths of your love for us or the mystery of you. We are gathered to give you praise, to learn from you, and to hear your word. Bless our efforts, sanctify them, that you may be glorified over all. Amen.
